Job Description

Social Worker (Assistant Chief) Full‑time administrative Social Work Service (SWS) position at Columbia VA Health Care System. The Assistant Chief makes independent professional decisions, plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates SWSL programs, and has full authority to act for the Chief in all matters delegated to him and for the service in the absence of the Chief. Pay Range $105,383 – $137,000 per year. Summary Independent professional decisions, overall planning, organizing, directing and evaluation of SWSL programs. The incumbent has full authority to act for the Chief in all matters delegated to him and full authority for the service in the absence of the Chief. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – proficient in spoken and written English. United States Citizenship required; non‑citizens only if no qualified citizen available. Education – Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited school. Licensure – licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at the master’s level (advanced practice license required). Experience – One year of experience equivalent to GS‑12, demonstrating advanced practice and supervisory skills. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities – proficiency in administrative duties, legal/ethical standards, program development, consultation, and supervisory duties. Assignment – Must provide supervision to a moderate social work service and staff across multiple disciplines. Physical Requirements – see VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties Make decisions on work problems presented by subordinate social work supervisors. Collaborate with other program staff on changes affecting social work activities. Advise Care Line Managers/Chiefs on social work matters. Conduct performance reviews, investigate employee complaints, and make supervisory selections. Develop and monitor clinical practice standards, guidelines, and operating procedures. Ensure provision of social work services to patients on inpatient and outpatient programs. Provide consultation to community health and welfare agencies to enhance veteran services. Lead recruitment, orientation, and continuing education of staff. Manage program budgets, utilization of resources, and quality improvement initiatives.
